Punk’d by Microsoft

The Beast of Redmond is showing it’s human side again. Microsoft’s Coding4Fun page has a few suggestions for how to play an April Fool’s prank using a computer. Some of you may remember that ShamelessGeeks.com was the victim of a sick practical joke by the very same people last year. The whole thing caused a significant amount of psychological damage to both of me, and we hope it is never repeated.

Indian man accidentally divorces wife while sleeping.

In case you haven’t seen this one, a 30-year-old Indian man accidentally divorced his wife by declaring so 3 times in his sleep. I can’t wait to see the divorce lawyers of the world start rioting.

Hey… I think I found a good industry to outsource to India!

Pixelantes of the world unite

After Jack Thompson, in his now infamous speech against gaming, created the word Pixelante you knew it was going to start popping up on t-shirts all over the world. Well, it took a few months but finally it has happened. Gamepolitics has released the Pixelante t-shirt to end all Pixelante t-shirts and soon it should be in every hardcore gamers’ closet. Before you get mad that we are shilling for Game Politics, (well, yes we are so you can mad), please note: the t-shirt is cool and all proceeds go the charity Get-Well Gamers Foundation. So go out and get your Pixelante t-shirt. While you are, how about getting one our t-shirts. The proceeds may not go to charity, but they do go to a good cause. They support this site and keep jobs in the USA.

Games of the Week for March 27, 2006 - April 1, 2006

Sorry for the delay but I was busy last night, onto the list of the games coming out this week:

Beatmania for the Playstation 2
Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII for the PC
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for the PC
Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires for the XBox 360 and Playstation 2
EyeToy: Chat for the Playstation 2
Far Cry Instincts Predator for the XBox 360 and XBox
Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers for the PC, XBox and Playstation 2
Harvest Moon: Magical Melody for the Gamecube
Kingdom Hearts II for the Playstation 2
Painkiller: Hell Wars for the XBox
Rumble Roses XX for the XBox 360
Untold Legends: The Warrior’s Code for the PSP
Warpath for the XBox
WWII Combat: Iwo Jima for the PC, XBox

Again a lot of games coming out this week. Onto the highlights:

Kingdom Hearts 2: Square, Diseny, Final Fantasy all in one game and no damm Gummi ship this time, is this a perfect game our what. Okay yes the last one was a big letdown, but Square promised they learned their lesson and are not including the Gummi Ship. For those two players that loved the Gummi Ship, tough.

Rumble Roses XX: I love the advertising for this game, now with actual gameplay. Gee I wonder if the fans of this game will notice.

Beatmania: After a delay from a few weeks, the USA will finally get to enjoy Beatmania only a few years late. Okay there was those Playstation version but the less said about those the better.

Harvest Moon: Magical Melody: Shameless will be happy a new Harvest Moon.

Far Cry Instincts Predator: Another game Shameless and the whole LAN crew will be happy about. Another solid FPS.

My pick for this week is: Kingdom Hearts II. It has the hype and it looks like Square did learn their lessons from the first Kingdom Heart. If not it is not like I have not picked a few turds as the pick for the week *cough* Death Jr. *cough*.

Pictures from Sony’s Keynote at GDC

Someone has posted pictures from Phil Harrison’s keynote speech at GDC. Included in the set of pictures is a bunch of screenshots of upcoming PS3 games: Warhawk, Motorstrom and Ratch and Clank. Some other things of note is that the PSP is getting a GPS locater, just like it competition the Gizmondo has, and the ability to Voice and Video over IP. Continuing Sony’s tradition of focusing on anything but the games for the PSP. It also appears Sony plans to turn the PSP into a Thinware client by using the power of the Internet to store your data and run software. Gee didn’t that idea bomb back in the late 90’s? Some neat tidbits about the middleware and complier for the PS3. The only thing that stuck out to me was that the compiler was made in my hometown Round Rock (Austin), Texas. I am kinda scarred that Gamespy is providing the network services. Then again GameSpy did invent a really good punkbuster so it may not be as bad as I think it will be. Then again Sony plans for one of the major revenue stream to be in game advertising, just so we can have the pleasure of paying $60 for commercials. Last thing of note is a few blurry screenshots of the upcoming God of War sequel present by God of War creator David Jaffe. Looks like Sony is planning for a big Christmas.

Valiant comics first fan fest

ValiantFans have announced that their first Valiant Fan’s Con will be in New York, March 31 - April 2, 2006. Valiant comics was a comic book company/universe that came out in the late 80’s and sadly died a painful death in mid 90’s after Akklaim bought it. To comic fans it is best remember as the line that started the whole crazy speculation market of 90’s. Also for creating the concepts of the zero issues, gimmick covers and variant covers. It was also a main player, next to Image, that was blamed for the crash of comics in the late 90’s. To me the Valiant universe was one of the best developed and well written comic universe ever done. At least while Jim Shooter was there. After he left the bolts slowly feel off and the Valiant universe lost all its charm and tight continuity that made the universe worth reading.
Thankful because of the speculator market (in other words all those guys who bought a case of each issue) of the 90’s most Valiant issues can be picked up for peanuts, literally. The only hard stuff to find is the Pre-Unity books, which can still be bought for a couple bucks, and the end runs of few titles. I am only 100 issue short of collecting every Valiant book ever published and it is mostly end run stuff. So if you have a few issues to sell drop me a line and I will ship you my want list.
My favorite character from the Valiant universe was Magnus the Robot Fighter. Magnus was created back in the 60’s by Gold Key and Russ Manning as a Tarzan in the future. Jim Shooter revived him in the 80’s in the Valiant line and took him in a new direction that sort made him a warrior king caught in an universe that no longer accepted him . Other favorites of mine where: Rai, Bloodshot, Eternal Warrior, Archer and Armstrong, Timewalker, X-O Manowar and the Harbingers. Rai was the defender of Japan, in Magnus timeframe, who’s ancestor was Bloodshot and who’s Nantes blood he shared. Bloodshot was an ex-mafia warrior who gained super powers when he injected with Nanted by some evil people, who he swore revenge against. Eternal Warrior, Armstrong and Timewalker where all immortal brothers who helped defend the earth from evil people and alien invaders. Archer was Armstrong’s sidekick who would go on to found the Archers, who where a peace keeping group in Magnus timeframe. In addition to be immortal, Timewalker was a time traveler who journeyed from time frame to time frame, having many adventures. X-O Manowar who was a Viking warrior who stole a battle armor from his enslavers the spider aliens. The spider aliens where also the main bad guys in most of the other Valiant books. Lastly the Harbingers where a group of super power individuals who had escape from the clutches of Harbinger, the evil villain who also created Bloodshot. Two of the members where also the parents of Magnus the Robot Fighter. In other words anything that happened in the Valiant universe mattered and had impact no matter when it occurred.
Some of the Valiant creators, writers and artists announced for this year Valiant Fan Convention include: Rodney Ramos, Howard Simpson, Sean Chen, Anthony Castrillo, Mike Bair, Mike Leeke (sat. only, who I have meet and no we are not related.), Yvel Guichet, Hannibal King, Louis Small Jr., Winston Blakely, Jim Calafiore, Michael Cavallaro, Jorge Gonzalez, Jeff Gomez,Chrysoula Artemis-Gomez, Andrew Wendel, Dennis Calero (aka Atomic paintbrush), Walt Simonson (tent), Mike McGuire, Rafael Kayanan, Kevin Kobasic, Stu Suchit, Serge-Frederic Clermont, Simon Erich, Phyllis Novin, Darren Sanchez (sun. only), Joe Albelo, Omar Banmally, Alex Glass, Valerie Dorazio, Savark Dicupe, Mark McKenna, Lee Stacy, Evan Skolnick, Eric Hope, Anthony Inciarrano, Yvonne DeSoto, and John Cebollero. ValiantFans.com will also premier a new X-O lithograph illustrated by X-O Manowar co-creator, Bob Layton. Hopefully there will also be lots of panels and plenty of Valiant goodies for sale, most likely at a ridiculous markup.

Dell’s purchase of Alienware

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you already know that Dell has purchased Alienware, the worlds best known supplier of mega-expensive gaming machines. Sadly, I fear that this is more likely to cause a decline in Alienware than a rise in the pizazz of Dell machines. Who knows… maybe Dell will leave them alone as promised. One can hope.

Last of the (yawn) P4EE chips released yesterday.

Intel released a new 3.73MHz version of the P4EE called the 965 Extreme Edition yesterday. Most of the hardware reviewers yawned. That’s what Intel gets when they have a hugely successful demo of the Conroe, then release something that is essentially a minor speed bump for an old design. It’s probably a perfectly good chip, but it doesn’t have a prayer of being a sales success now that everyone is waiting for the Conroe.

Microsoft shaking Windows

Microsoft announced that it will be shaking up it’s Windows unit on the day after announcing yet another Windows Vista delay. Though I applaud them for refusing to release the OS until it is finished, 4 years worth of delays on a 2 year project is outrageous.

Did everyone notice the passage about management fear of sending bad news up the chain? That usually means that the guys at the top are being too tough on the middle and lower managers. Unfortunately, it is the way nearly every software company has operated since the .bomb bubble burst. It’s hard to find a manager who is competent, yet strong enough to make a stand, and even harder to find an upper level manager who doesn’t think he is above the laws of physics.

Windows Vista Delayed… again

This time it looks like Windows Vista won’t be out until at least January of 2007. Lots of Windows ‘dependents’ are squealing about the delay. In addition, it looks like Microsoft’s stock price is slipping a bit.

Since Microsoft’s new policy about support covers a version until 2 years after it’s successor is released, this means a reprieve for those of us who aren’t looking forward to an upgrade.

What happened to Napoleon?

Actor John Heder sort of vanished after he did Napoleon Dynamite. This New York Times article explains what he is up to now(registration required). It also gives us a little bit more about his past. Evidently, John Heder is not really a geek but more of a religious type guy… but not the same type as Cruise. Hail Xeon! Granted, he speaks the very geeky language of Japanese, but that has more to do with where he did his Mormon mission. Anyway, John did not go underground and join a religious cult (Vote For Pedro!), he’s just has been busy working on several films. His first one, The Benchwarmers, is due to hit theaters this weekend. He has an animated movie, Monster House, and a live action movie, Mama’a Boy, coming out in a few weeks. After that he is due to star in a skating movie with Will Ferrel… once his ankle heals.

Fedora Core 5 Released

Fedora Core 5 was released yesterday. Sorry about the late post, but I have a day job ;-). You can pick up a copy at http://download.fedora.redhat.com, or just use ftp at the same URL like I do.

One piece of advice… It probably isn’t a good idea to install using the “everything” option. In the past, that option has installed too many obscure and unnecessary packages, causing serious stability problems. It’s always a better idea to check over the packages that you will be installing.

Tom Cruise goes after South Park

According to this CNN article, Tom Cruise is requesting that Comedy Central pull an episode of South Park that made fun of the Church of Scientology via a boycott. Sadly Comedy Central bowed to the pressure that is Cruise and the Church of Scientology and pulled reruns of the episode. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone issued the following state about the whole mess:

“So, Scientology, you have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for Earth has just begun,” the pair wrote.

“Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!”

I guess we now know which side of the million year war those two are on. Hail Xenu!!!!

Kao the Kangaroo Round 2 for the Playstation 2, Gamecube and XBox

Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence for the Playstation 2
Metroid Prime: Hunters for the Nintendo DS
Monster 4X4: World Circuit for the XBox
Neopets Petpet Adventure: The Wand of Wishing for the PSP
The Outfit for the XBox 360
River King: A Wonderful Journey for the Playstation 2
Splinter Cell Essentials for the PSP

Tetris DS for the Nintendo DS
The Tower SP for the Gameboy Advance
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble for the PSP
Warship Gunner 2 for the Playstation 2
World Poker Tour for the PSP
Worms: Open Warfare for the PSP and Nintendo DS

Wow what a big list, lots of PSP games, where were you two months ago when I was craving some serious handheld love. Onto the highlights:

Tetris DS, proving that every format needs some Tetris love or at least the game exec think they do.

Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble: Capcom continues pumping out the Viewtiful Joe sequels. Too bad people stopped loving them after the first one. Still I will be buying it, no matter how bad it is it is better then most of the other PSP games.

Daxter: Okay it came out last but it is Daxter. I have been waiting for this game for six months now. If I had done the game of the week list this one would have gotten game of the week honors.

River King: A Wonderful Journey: I loved this game when it was a Gameboy game and now it is a PS2 game and a budget price. A must buy for all you Harvest Moon freaks like Shameless.

Go! Sudoku: Just like Tetris ever handheld needs a Sudoku game. Thankfully someone noticed that and is now providing one for the PSP.

Suikoden V: Paging all collectors, another Suikoden is hitting the shelves. Get it before it hits the $100 mark like the others have.

Metroid Prime: Hunters: I thought I was done talking about games I played at last year E3 but I guess not. Another game I played and posted a preview about on this site. I hated but then again I hate Metroid so I am biased.

Me and My Katamari : Leave it to the Japanese to pervert something so sweet and innocent.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Finally after a six month delay we get to enjoy the next Elder Scrolls. Hopefully the delay will remove a lot of the suck that I had been hearing about.

The Godfather: Finally we get the game that is going save EA. Gee and I thought that game was going to be Madden 2007.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence: Just what we need another Metal Gear Solid 3 rewrite, just as Metal Gear Solid 3 entered the budget bins.

A lot to pick from but there can only be one and game of the week is: Daxter. Yhea I know it came out last week but since we did not have one last week, well it is fair to pick this week.

Chinese game stresses socialism and good deeds

Well, it was bound to happen. The Chinese have created a game that glorifies the Chinese Communist Party’s here Lei Feng. Though the idea of glorifying good deeds, hard work, and helping people might be a noble cause, it sounds like a snore to me. Then again, I never liked Harvest Moon either. Something about farming and sewing that make me think of watching boards warp.

I always like to play games that add excitement to my day. If I wanted to learn how to farm or sew, I’d move to the country and buy a thimble. I guess I’m just a decadent Capitalist at heart.

Sour grapes from “His Billness"?

Bill Gates had some very unflattering things to say about MIT’s $100 laptop project. It sounds pretty mean-spirited to me. I’m sure that if the project were going to sell a new copy of Windows with each and every machine, he would be much nicer about it. Unfortunately, the copy of Windows alone would exceed the $100 budget. Please Bill, don’t put down a valiant attempt to do good. Jealousy makes you look ridiculous.

PS3 “unofficially” pushed back to November

Sources all over the web are saying that Sony has delayed the PS3 launch till November at the earliest. It’s important to remember that this is only at the rumor stage, and that things may change tonight at Sony’s conference. It will be interesting to see if this one is a real piece of news, or just another hoax.

No more Chef for South Park

Isaac Hayes has quit his job as the voice of Chef on South Park. Apparently, he got a little sensitive about South Park’s attack on Scientology last year. South Park is no place for someone sensitive to anything, but most especially religion. Bye Chef, we’ll miss ya.

Space Shuttle launch delayed until July.

A faulty fuel tank sensor is being blamed for NASA delaying the next Space Shuttle launch until at least July 2006. You really can’t blame them for an abundance of caution. Another accident could be fatal to what’s left of the Shuttle program.

Google’s partial loss to the Bush administration

It looks like Google will be required to turn over a small amount of data in order to help the government in a child pornography case. The American public should be annoyed at both sides of this dispute. They should be annoyed at the Bush administration for forcing the data out of Google, and they should be annoyed at Google for giving in to the Chinese government, but not the US government.

On the one hand, the feds are trying to crack into the privacy policies of Google… not to mention the other web companies out there. Obviously, nobody wants to see a child pornographer go free. However, if we start giving in to big brother now, where will it stop?

On the other hand, we have a big company that gives in to a government that threatens to cut off it’s market, but squeals loudly for it’s consumers when there is no danger that taking a stand will lose them business. It’s nice of them to think of their consumers, but their altruism is in question. I don’t see “courage of convictions” here, just commerce.

McAfee’s Freudian Slip

For a few hours on Friday, McAfee’s anti-virus software was identifying legitimate applications, including MS Excel, as malware. As you can guess, this caused files from these applications to be quarantined or deleted, breaking the applications in the process.

I know lots of geeks out there who will tell you that Excel is some of the worst malware out there, but that they wouldn’t want it deleted from their disk. I’m wondering how many people had the file deleted, but didn’t notice any change in Excel’s behavior ;-)

Fighting Nvidia’s information overload

Nvidia’s recent release of the G71 and G73 chips, along with ATI’s paper release of the X1800GTO, has cause a serious amount of information overload at PC enthusast websites. The huge volume of test results and benchmarks out there have taken up a significant amount of my time over the last few days. Just so that you don’t have to go through all of it too, here is my take on this:

1. The 7900GTX, which is the high-end version of the G71, has put Nvidia back in contention for the top slot. However, it isn’t a clear-cut winner. It is essentially a die shrink of the 7800GTX, allowing for a jump in clock speed and a corresponding jump in performance. The upside here is that the competition could spark a price war at the top end.

2. The 7900GT, which is essentially a 7900GTX with a stepped down clock and smaller heatsink, delivers a lot of bang for the buck. Add the fact that it generates less heat, requires less power, and generally contributes less noise to the system, and you have a major winner on your hands.

3. The 7600GT looks to be an excellent performer, but it enters as a mid-range product at a mid-range price. It is essentially a major refresh of the 6600GT, and should find a place in the <$200 market. ATI announced the release of the X1800GTO as a counter to this card, but it doesn't look like it quite measures up yet. The X1800GTO also look like it might be a paper launch only, and we'll have to wait and see if anyone actually releases a card that runs one.

It looks like NVidia is back in contention at the high end, with a solid hold on the mid-range market. ATI is still competitive, with what appears to be a slight edge at the top end. Competition this fierce is always good for the consumer. I can’t wait to see what ATI’s response is.

More good news from Intel

No, it isn’t a stock tip. It’s Intel’s statement that they will fight AMD by improving quality. If true, this will have a dramatic effect on the PC enthusiast in a few months. Welcome back Intel, we’ve missed you for the last few years.

Intel’s Conroe like looks like a winner so far. We’ll know for sure wen we see released hardware. Until then, it’s important to remember that AMD is still the performance champ.

3/8/2006

Conroe buzz

The buzz surrounding the Intel Conroe demo has gotten deafening. You can see published benchmarks from AnandTech, Hexus.net, and many others that show Conroe with a significant performance lead over AMD’s FX-60. Intel was claiming a lead of 40% in both categories, prompting disbelief from a lot of us. Benchmarks are actually showing a little less than the 40% performance lead, but still a significant jump from the best AMD has to offer. Needless to say, the fanboys from both sides are out in force.

I say: don’t believe pre-release benchmarks… but don’t disbelieve them either.

I am glad to see that Intel is back in the performance game. It is quite likely that they will regain the performance crown from AMD when Conroe is released in Q3. However, I think that we need to back away from the numbers presented and wait until the chips and their systems are actually released.

The benchmarks published by the online trade rags seem to have been done completely on the up-and-up. The numbers seem to be a genuine attempt to tell us what they observed while doing their own testing. I detect no dishonesty. However…

Intel was in complete control of the test. They supplied the software, they supplied the hardware, they controlled the parameters. Anyone who has ever been involved in a hardware demo knows how easy it is for an over-zealous marketing dork to fudge one, and how difficult it can be to detect.

I, for one will wait until the CPU is released. On that day… Let the better chip win! If the Conroe performs as well as Intel is predicting, I’ll know what my next CPU purchase will be. Unless, of course, AMD’s counter-punch is even more impressive.

Not everyone is a Geek.

Ok. I’ve seen this story stating that half of all returns are due to complexity at least 5 times in the last 2 days. I’m not going to disagree with it at all. I’m going to explain it.

Because Geeks are the people with the best mental focus in the world, they end up designing nearly all of the high-tech gadgets. Add in the fact that most Geeks are somewhat socially isolated, you end up with Geeks designing things for the only people they understand… other Geeks.

The aforementioned study gives another hint about the basis of the problem. Joe average will typically spend 20 minutes trying to get something to work before giving up and taking it back. Geeks never give up.

I can’t remember a single instance of a Geek giving up on any kind of gadget and returning it. That would be something that he or she would not consider unless forced to at gunpoint. Even then, he/she would pick it back up if the threat of death were removed. The only thing close to giving up you will ever see from a geek is “putting it on the back burner” until he or she is no longer busy. The fact that it is given a priority a little lower than learning to limbo or having both eyebrows removed is another story altogether.

So… In a nutshell… High-tech gadgets are designed by people with nearly infinite attention spans for others just like themselves. These gadgets are then sold to people with attention spans geared more toward the length of a sitcom. Do I need to go any further?

Games of the week for March 5,2006 - March 11,2006

Another week and another list of games coming out this week. Onto the list:

Alfa Romeo Racing Italiano for the Playstation 2
Burnout Revenge for the XBox 360
College Hoops 2K6 for the XBox 360
Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai for the PSP
Let’s Ride Dreamer for the Gameboy Advance
Naruto: Clash of Ninja for the Gamecube
Naruto: Ninja Council for the Gameboy Advance
Pokemon Trozei for the Nintendo DS
Pursuit Force for the PSP
Scurge: Hive for the Nintendo DS
Samurai Warriors: State of War for the PSP
Shadow Hearts: From the New World for the Playstation 2
SpongeBob Squarepants: The Yellow Avenger for the PSP
Tales of Phantasia for the Gameboy Advance
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the XBox and XBox 360
Untold Legends: The Warrior’s Code for the PSP

Again another week with a lot to pick from. The highlights of this weeks are:
Tales of Phantasia: The next game in the continuing the tradition of porting a successful 16 bit RPG to Gameboy Advance.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfigher: The XBox 360 version blew people away at E3, hopefully it will live up to hype it got and then lost around that time. Anyways it is the next Ghost Recon and would be Shameless favorite game alongside Harvest Moon if he played console games.
Naruto: you can stop importing this game. Finally some discovered that there is a massive fan following for Naruto and did a no brainier and brought Naruto to the US shores.

My pick for this week is: Naruto. I have to admit I really enjoyed playing the imported version at various Anime cons and this one should be just as good.

GOP Spyware?

Well.. close enough. A recent GOP CD proclaiming the evils of gay marraige also collects data from those who view it. I don’t mind if it is used as a polling mechanism, as long as it is clear that it is forwarding data, it tells me what data gets forwarded, and it is secure. This CD seems to do none of the above.

I see it as a bad omen of what is in store for the American public in the near future. If political parties start insinuating themselves into our privacy using technological means, they should be punished with a resounding defeat in the following election. I hope the DNC and GOP both heed the warning.

I think we should all let those political turkeys know that we don’t want them spying on us for their own juvenile power grabs. Remember that we are dealing with partisans who believe that the ends always justify the means. We must make it clear that whoever engages in this kind of behavior will ultimately cause the death of his precious political party.

84 year old thinks bratwurst contest is gross

A former Sheboygan Wisconsin city attorney wants to end the yearly bratwurst eating contest and wants to bring the issue to a vote.

Once again, we have an obscure politician attacking one of the most important issues of the day: the horrors of competitive eating. When will the American people realize that it is only a matter of time before one of these competitors eats so much that he explodes? Would you want your children to be among the innocent bystanders who get showered with undigested sausage scraps? Oh the horror of it all!

Newest additions to Harvest Moon

Harvest Moon has a special place in the hearts of the staff here at Shamelessgeeks.com. We have been farming mad, particular Shameless, since it came out for the Super Nintendo. Sadly however, the Harvest Moon franchise has grown stale and the game play fairly repetitive. It has gotten to the point that when a new Harvest Moon was announced I no longer eagerly waited for it come out and just did not care. All that changed today when Kotaku posted the new features for the Nintendo DS version of Harvest Moon DS.
My favorite feature has to be the ability to farm while exploring the town at the same time. I have always hated how exploring took time out my farming. Now in the Nintendo DS version I don’t have that issue.
Hopefully Harvest Moon DS will implement half the features as good as they sound paper. No matter what this game just got added to my pre-order list.
