This server runs entirely on open source software, so it is only fitting that I take a few bytes here to thank those who contributed so much to the Apache and Fedora projects. Without their efforts, this site would be possible, but VERY unlikely. For a quick overview of the Open Source Movement, check here.
Much to the dismay of Microsoft and others, Open Source software has taken over the lion's share of the Internet server market. You really can't blame people for preferring a free, fast, and secure system to one that is bloated, buggy, and prone to hacks. The bottom of this page links to the Apache and Fedora projects, where you can download your own system.
Just to set the record straight, I'm not your typical Microsoft basher either. I think they do a very nice job of designing desktops and apps for the clueless. They have done a lot of the evangelical work that has contributed to the huge expansion of the personal computer, and they had a lot to do with turning the PC into a commodity item. Unfortunately, their quality train seems to have run out of steam. IMHO, if Microsoft ever decided to spend as much time on fixing security and quality as they do on their packaging, they would have a product that is tough to beat in any market, not just the desktop.
A little about the server equipment: I've finally graduated to a dedicated commercial web server. The current setup is a 2.4 GHz P4, with 512MB of RAM and 80GB on a 10Mb/s connection. This will probably keep up with me for quite a while, unless I'm VERY lucky (or VERY unlucky).
The home page blog is a somewhat modified version of Wordpress. It's not that there was anything wrong with the original version, It's just that I can't help myself... I just have to change things around. If you dislike any of the features you find here, don't blame the Wordpress people. It's probably something I modified myself.
